Abu Dhabi to Host the 47th Chess Olympiad and 4th Chess
Olympiad for People with Disabilities
In an exciting development for the global chess
community, Abu Dhabi has been selected to host the 47th Chess Olympiad and the
4th Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities. This momentous occasion is the
result of a recently signed agreement between the President of the
International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the General Secretary of the Abu
Dhabi Sports Council.
The UAE has long been a significant player in promoting
chess, hosting major tournaments like the Dubai Open and the Sharjah Masters,
and organizing the 2013 World Youth Championship in Al Ain, which saw around
1,900 participants from over 100 federations.
Securing the Bid
In December 2023, Abu Dhabi triumphed over Genoa,
Italy, in securing the bid to host this prestigious event. During the FIDE
Council meeting on December 17, 2023, Abu Dhabi received 96 votes compared to
Genoa’s 60, highlighting the city’s dedication to promoting chess and its
capability to host an event of this magnitude.

international unity.
History of the Chess Olympiad for People with
Disabilities
The Chess Olympiad, organized by FIDE, is a prestigious
biennial tournament that gathers teams from various countries to compete. The
first official Chess Olympiad was held in London in 1927. Initially organized
at irregular intervals, the Olympiad has been held every two years since 1950,
except during World War II and the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to online
events in 2020 and 2021. The tournament features an Open section and a Women’s
section, each with their respective trophies: the Hamilton-Russell Cup and the
Vera Menchik Cup. A relatively recent addition to the chess world, reflecting
FIDE’s commitment to inclusivity, is the Chess Olympiad for People with
Disabilities. The inaugural event was held in Belgrade, Serbia, from January 29
to February 5, 2023. Organized by FIDE’s Commission for people with
disabilities, this tournament provides a platform for players with disabilities
to compete internationally. Poland won the first Olympiad, with the
International Physically Disabled Chess Association (IPCA) and the Philippines
taking silver and bronze, respectively. The journey to this milestone began
with the first Online Olympiad for People with Disabilities, held from November
20 to December 3, 2020. This event coincided with the United Nations International
Day of Persons with Disabilities and paved the way for the in-person event in
Belgrade.
Hosting the 47th Chess Olympiad and the 4th Chess
Olympiad for People with Disabilities in Abu Dhabi is a testament to the city’s
growing influence in the chess world. This event promises to be a remarkable
celebration, bringing together chess enthusiasts from around the globe to honor
the rich history and bright future of the game.
